Large Animal Rescue

Large Animal RescueMost Fire Departments are well equipped and well trained for protecting and saving human life and property, but what about horses, cattle and other large animals? A horse can be worth several hundred to several hundreds of thousands of dollars and for some, a means of making a living. A horse in a rolled over trailer cannot just be pulled out. A rescuer in the wrong place at the wrong time can quickly become a victim.

Without the proper equipment and training the chances of injury to the rescuer is huge with the very real possibility that the animal is more injured by the rescue than the original incident.

Large Animal RescueThe Eureka Fire Protection District recognized that this type of rescue is a unique challenge that calls for specialized training and equipment. In order to minimize risk of injury to rescuer and animal, a group of volunteers was formed to create a Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue response team. The members of this team have undergone specialized training in how to safely prepare for and approach large animal incidents such as overturned and wrecked trailers or livestock haulers, large animals loose on the road, large animals stuck in mud or ravines, and incidents where people might be trapped with the animal.
