Now that the weather is consistently warm enough that residents want to spend more and more time outside, it is the ideal time to conduct a seasonal test of your household’s smoke detectors. On top of your spring cleaning efforts, we strongly advise against overlooking one of the single most important safety features in your home. Ensuring that your smoke alarms are functioning properly makes a world of difference, especially in the event of a fire.

Take a few minutes to check and test your smoke detectors and guarantee that you and your family are protected from the risk of fire year-round.

Protect Your Home With Our Step-By-Step Smoke Detector Maintenance Guide

Maintaining your home’s smoke detectors doesn’t require a lot of effort, only consistency. Establishing and following a regular maintenance routine for your smoke detectors can help prevent malfunctions, false alarms, and ensure your first line of defense remains functional.

All you have to do to maintain your smoke detectors is:

  • Check that each decor is clean and property installed

  • Check that its batteries are still functional

  • Keep track of its age

  • Conduct the occasional test

How to test your smoke alarms

Testing your fire detection system is a quick and easy process. All you have to do is:

  • Press and hold the test button, conveniently located on the face of the detector, until the alarm sounds

  • Listen for a strong, consistent alert tone

  • Replace the batteries immediately if the alert tone is weak or nonexistent

  • If the alarm doesn’t respond, replace the unit right away

  • Test each unit individually throughout your home

For best results, we recommend homeowners test their smoke detectors at least once a month and after every battery change.

Commonly Asked Questions About Smoke Detector Maintenance

How to check if your smoke detectors are working properly?

The most reliable way to ensure that your smoke detectors are functioning as they should be by pressing the test button provided with each unit. This will verify the functionality of the alarm and internal electronics, and give you an idea of the health of the current battery.

Homeowners can also use smoke detector test spray if they’d like to conduct a more thorough check of their detector. If a smoke detector unit fails either test, homeowners should immediately remove and replace it.

How often should you check your smoke alarms at home?

Our fire emergency response personnel strongly recommend testing all the smoke alarms installed in a household at least once a month. However, battery changes can be pushed back to approximately once per year, or sooner if your unit is sounding a low-battery warning chirp.

It’s also a good idea to test alarms after any major home maintenance or power outages.

When to replace smoke detectors in your home

On average, most household smoke detectors require replacement every 10 years, even if they still seem to work. Similar to other electronic devices, a smoke detector will gradually become less sensitive over time, significantly dropping its effectiveness. Before you replace a unit, we recommend checking the manufacture date printed on the back of each unit, and replay any and all devices that fall outside of the outlined 10-year window.

What does it mean when a smoke detector is chirping?

If a smoke detector is chirping, that is commonly an indication that the battery is beginning to fail, but it can also be a signal for other issues such as:

  • Dust buildup

  • Temperature fluctuations

  • The end of the unit’s lifespan

To stop the chirping, you can start by replacing the battery. If the chirping persists, clean the unit or consider replacing it altogether.
